Architect is also an artist
He comes from a clan whose art is expressed with bulldozers, cranes and cement mixers…but today News 5’s Marion Ali discovered that there is at least one member of the Berbey family that has a finer touch.

His passion is to tell stories through his art. And while many of the pieces from this collection of oil paintings are abstract, Raul Berbey Garcia says one intention of the compilation is to promote Belize to tourists.

“Belize is very nationalistic and boasts many cultures. You can see Belizean scenes, the Mayas, and people of public interest. Many of these paintings are taken from catalogues, photos, and some are just from inspiration.”
But whether Garcia’s paintings feature famine in Africa or a typical day under the Belizean sun, his inspiration come from artists, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso, whose abstract and impressionism styles have been combine with his own vision.
Berbey has been painting since childhood in his native Panama, where he also developed a keen interest in architecture, working along with family for the last ten years in Belize.

“My brother, Javier Berbey designed Belama, Bella Vista, Motogu, San Antonio, Los Lagos and Vista del Mar. And I worked along with him with all those projects. Some of these projects are reflected in some of my pieces.”

Berbey’s collection, which features paintings done over the last two years, is currently on at the Mexican Institute on Newtown Barracks in Belize City. The pieces are available for sale.
