U.H.S. – U.D.P. broke it, U.D.P. fix it?
The Universal Health Services debate is expected to take up the House of Representatives’ time at its next house meeting, announced for January fifth. It should be must-see viewing as the two major political parties take up opposite views from each other. The governing United Democratic Party will argue for why ninety-plus million U.S. dollars should not be paid to the Belize Bank Limited for the outstanding loan on behalf of U.H.S. While officially the vote, at least for the U.D.P., is one of conscience, what will be the P.U.P.’s strategy? Leader John Briceño said that as consultations within the party continue, it is officially a problem for P.M. Dean Barrow and the U.D.P. to rectify.
John Briceño, Leader, P.U.P.
“The party, what we have been doing is we have a lot of discussions and also consultations with a number of people, including people in our constituencies. But as we have said from the beginning, Mr. Barrow did not ask for permission to break it up, so our position continues to be: ‘You broke it, you own it, you fix it – it is your problem.’ You created this problem that today the Belizean people are burdened with over ninety million dollars.”
