P.M. Mum on Budget

Dean Barrow

The budget for the new financial year 2018-2019, is to be tabled in the House of Representatives on March ninth, that’s two days after the municipal elections. From what we know, the private sector was not consulted nor have other sectors, as has been the case in the past. But we do know that it will be a billion dollar budget, the 2017-2018 budget was one point eight six billion dollars.   As to goodies or taxes, there is no certainty what to expect since the numbers seem to be a guarded secret.  Still, it is safe to say, the coffers are empty and debt has increased significantly.  This week Wednesday during the Nomination Day activities, we asked Prime Minister Dean Barrow, but he said he would not discuss the budget as the figures are being crunched at this time:

“What can Belizeans look forward to in the next financial year?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I don’t want to get into that; let’s wait for March ninth. I’ve been so caught up with what’s happening in terms of March seventh, that I haven’t yet been able to go over all the numbers with the Financial Secretary, so let me not speak out of turn.”
