Trinidad C.J. Archie Challenges Law Association, Media in Court

Trinidad and Tobago’s Law Association and some media houses have found themselves facing legal action from the country’s Chief Justice, Ivor Archie. Archie has been accused of various instances of misconduct in office, but denies the charges. His attorneys have now written the association challenging the investigation in the High Court. They plan to argue that the association cannot investigate the Chief Justice under the Legal Profession Act without violating the Constitution. They also charge that the association is biased, because it previously passed a no-confidence motion against the Chief Justice. Chief Justice Archie had previously refused to respond to a request from the Law Association after obtaining, through his attorneys, the evidence supporting its allegations. The presiding council of the association intends to fight the charges and has called a special general meeting for March sixteenth to consider the Committee’s report and any advice received from their advisors, Belize’s Senior Counsel Eamon Courtenay and Grenada’s Francis Alexis.
