G.S.U., G.O.B. Parodied in Episode of NBC’s “Taken”
We end the news broadcast tonight with a story close to home. Local fans of NBC’s crime drama Taken were astonished by the plot of a recent episode titled Hammurabi, directed by Lukas Ettlin, in which a laid-off worker kidnaps a high-powered accountant in revenge for his lost pension. The team of Bryan Mills and Christina Hart then gets swept up in a case of class warfare when Bryan decides to help the kidnapper get justice. Parts of that episode fictitiously depict Belize, particularly the coastal community of Hopkins, where the antagonist was holed up in a fortress. The shocker comes when it is revealed that he is being protected by the Gang Suppression Unit, yes, the very same GSU that has grown in notoriety in real-life. Additionally, the storyline paints the Government of Belize as corrupted, willing to turn a blind eye on criminal activity for the right price. The episode, though entirely fictional, does seem to take its cues from widely held rumors involving the police department and certain members of government. Here’s an excerpt from that January twenty-sixth episode:
