MoH Takes Second Look at ‘Cancer Healer’
The Ministry of Health indicates it will launch another investigation into a British health practitioner reportedly based in Belize. The Daily Mirror in the U.K. has printed an expose naming forty-nine year old Amanda Mary Jewell, who goes by Mary, as a “quack,” giving victims of cancer false hope with bogus treatments using dangerous and banned products. Jewell leads the Healing Oracle cancer unit on a private beach in an unnamed location in Belize, offering treatments which she claims are “mainly herbal” despite endorsing hormone and chemical treatments on a blog. Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero told us that last year the Ministry received a request to practice from a company without named principals. The listed requirements were given but there was no response and officially, no such operation is authorized anywhere in Belize. The alleged operation, he says, appears to cater strictly to foreign nationals and not Belizeans. According to the Mirror, Jewell admits she is not a doctor, nor is she qualified to do operations, adding that she has lived abroad most of her adult life. But she is said to charge dying patients in Belize thousands of dollars to try her cures. The Mirror reports that Jewell was being probed by British authorities before she left the UK in 2015. She has also worked in the Dominican Republic, Bulgaria and Mexico, but the Mirror quotes a source close to her as saying she has no medical training at all and is self-taught in alternative and holistic therapy. Jewell, a double divorcee according to the newspaper, recently began a relationship with the widower of one of her former patients who died from brain tumours. Meanwhile two of her critics claim she is behind reported harassment of them despite one of them reporting her to Belize authorities.
