Dion Leslie’s CitCo Farewell

Dion Leslie

U.D.P. Belize City mayoral candidate Dion Leslie suffered a stunning defeat on Wednesday.  The People’s United Party slate, led by political newcomer Bernard Wagner, dealt the ruling party a staggering blow, trouncing them by eleven seats to none at City Hall.  Today, we caught up with the beaten politician who magnanimously conceded the loss to the P.U.P. Eleven, for the first time in fifteen years.

Dion Leslie, U.D.P. Mayoral Candidate

“I have to thank God for allowing us and watching over us that we had a safe and democratic election.  A great thank you to the party, the party leader, the secretariat, all the standard bearers and area reps.  Thank you to my family, my team especially, the U.D.P. Eleven and most of all to our supporters for coming out and of course a big congratulation to Mayor Bernard and his entire team on their victory yesterday.”

“What do you think caused this quite catastrophic defeat for the U.D.P.?”

Dion Leslie

“As the prime minister mentioned, it’s a couple of things of course, the gaps that we had to fill in areas that we didn’t have representation.  The national issues, to some extent, hurt us.  As we were campaigning, at no time did the voters really bring up issues on the municipality or even when the opposition were hitting us over and over relentlessly in the media, there was nothing of substance in relation to the municipality or the mandates in Belize City.  It was all national issues and they basically ran a municipal campaign like they were running a general election campaign and that really hurt us.  They played on people’s emotions.  Belize City voters vote a lot on emotions as well and that played a big factor in the results yesterday.”

“There are many who have suggested that you aren’t the right man for the job, that you didn’t have the common touch.  That’s what some said, that maybe if it was Mr. Willoughby who is known for his trench work or even the mayor who has this stellar record, the outgoing mayor who has this stellar record, that the U.D.P. may have won.  Do you accept that criticism that it may be about you?”

Dion Leslie

“I really noh di look back.  I know when I was victorious in the convention last year August that I dedicated my entire life, so to speak, to six months of campaigning trying to bring in victory for the U.D.P. and the entire team, so I won’t stand and look back on what ifs.”

Building drains is good, but YES, any election in Belize has to be taken as a national level especially with the crime and no work, I myself would not vote for you.
