Henry Cornejo Dodges Another Murder Charge

Ducking away from television cameras, twenty-seven year old Henry Cornejo this morning left the precincts of the Supreme Court a free man again. After previously being acquitted in 2012 of a murder committed in 2009 when he was a minor, Cornejo was accused six months later of being the triggerman in the shocking death of twenty-nine year old Marvin Glenford Nunez. On December seventh, 2012, Nunez had just dropped off his stepdaughter at Saint Ignatius Primary School compound on Euphrates Avenue and Basra Street. He was turning away after waving goodbye to her when someone walked up behind him and shot twice in the head, killing him instantly in full view of students, parents and onlookers. Supreme Court Justice Collin Williams, newly appointed and no relation to fellow Justice Marilyn Williams, began hearing the case on Tuesday. Prosecuting was Kileru Awich and Anthony Sylvestre represented Cornejo. Five formal witnesses were heard from on Tuesday, but Awich aborted the case this morning when the Crown’s main witness was to have testified. He indicated that because of insufficient evidence to prove the charge of murder, he entered a motion of nolle prosequi, discontinuing the case. Cornejo was told that if sufficient evidence was found, the charge could be brought back again, but for now he was free to go. After court adjourned, his relatives hid his face with a rag and rushed him quickly into a taxi they had gotten to take him home.
