The Results of the Summit of the Americas
Belize was represented at the eighth Summit of the Americas by both Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington and Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte. This triennial meeting of members of the Organization of American States offers Belize the opportunity to network with fellow states on important issues, some of which Elrington outlined.
Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
“The main purpose of those summits is really for people to sort of strengthen and formalize your positions with respect to the goals which are the sustainable development goals, the security issues, the cooperation issues, national position on climate change and that kind of thing. The whole intention is that the region as a whole will work together to attain and advance the development of these various programs, which are articulated by the United Nations, and which we continue to work towards, whether it is energy, security or climate change.”
The minister also led the delegation to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London.
