Meet Erica Jang, P.U.P. Standard Bearer Hopeful for Dangriga

On Sunday, the People’s United Party will be holding its convention to select the standard bearer in Dangriga. The race started out with six persons, but historian Joseph Sampson has since retracted his candidacy. Now, four men: Doctor Louis Zabaneh, Antony Ramos, Hilberto Arzu and Gregory Ovado, and the only woman on the ballot, Erica Jang will be contesting the convention. Jang, we note, is the sibling of Ovado. She was the only P.U.P. Candidate to win her seat in the municipal elections back in March, but now she says she wants to offer herself to the Dangriga constituency, which includes Hope Creek and Sarawee Villages. Jang made her rounds to the media today to share why she feels she is the candidate for the P.U.P. in Dangriga.

“I wanted to be an example for young girls. I also wanted to be a supporter of women in this race and I also feel that I wanted to do for those who have done it ahead of us. I believe that as a female, we must have some sort of representation within the party and that is why I wanted to do this. Also, I want to address some of the concerns that I have been hearing while walking around. I think that these can only be done through the experiences that we have and knowing that you have also passed through them. Some of the concerns that we have in Dangriga is job creation. People have been asking about that. It is no question at the back of our minds; it is also a concern in the wider population. Also, in Dangriga, I want to look at training, empowering individuals through education and looking at infrastructure not in terms of streets, but in terms of helping individuals with their education and skills building. Through this medium, I believe we will be able to empower young people, empower women and empower men and they in turn will be able to become creative and as long as that creativity exists, they will be able to make jobs for themselves and later hire individuals.   The people to whom I have been campaigning are telling me that they have elected me and I was the only P.U.P. Councilor that got in and they believe that this job is for me and I can make a difference. I am also considering myself as a minority councilor, through this medium it is kind of difficult for me to do a lot and hence the reason I decided to set my hat in this race.”

The convention takes place from nine to four this Sunday at the Holy Ghost Primary School in Dangriga Town.
