Rene Montero Says ‘Yes’ To the ICJ

Rene Montero

We also asked Cayo Central Area Representative, Rene Montero, whether he supports taking the Belize Guatemalan dispute for resolution by the International Court of Justice. It is no secret that many Government Ministers are pro-I.C.J., including Montero. The minister told News Five on Monday that the I.C.J. is the only way the problem can be solved.

Rene Montero, Area Representative, Cayo Central

“We need to solve this problem and how are we going to solve this problem if we do not take it to the ICJ. Otherwise we will continue living with this dispute with Guatemala so at some point we need to solve this problem. It can only be solved if we take it to the I.C.J.”

Hipolito Novelo

“So you are yes for the ICJ?”

Rene Montero

“That is the only way it can be solved. You know we have to live in peace at some time with our neighbors. Belize is an independent and sovereign country. Belize da fi we. Belize belongs to us. We as Belizeans suppose to say that we will not give even a centimeter of our country to Guatemala. Belice is nuestro. Es de Belice. Es de los Belicenos.”
