Great Belize Television’s Channel Five Wins CBU’s People’s Choice Award
Now for good news…Great Belize Television’s Channel Five has won its first award for this year’s Caribbean Broadcasting Awards Competition. Polling more than fifty-five thousand votes online, ‘Triple Joy’ a news story aired on this station in September 2017 won the People’s Choice Award. The story focused on three bundles of joy: Marlon, Malrick and Miracle Garnett. The babies were born on September fifth at the K.H.M.H. to Virginia Garnett. To celebrate the triple birth the hospital held a special ceremony in their honor. The story was written and narrated by reporter Andrea Polanco. The interviews were conducted by Duane Moody who explained that while it is the first time stories were submitted in this category, he and Andrea clinched the award from Bahamas, which traditionally won.

“Chanel Five actually had four different submissions in this category and it is the first time that we won it. For me that is the honor in it that we brought it home to Belize for the first time. Andrea actually wrote the story. Darrel and I went out early that morning to the K.H.M.H. to meet Virgina Garnett, the mother of the triplets. It was exciting for her and really overwhelming to see her cry and people coming towards her to support her. We had to go to another story and Andrea took it on and did an amazing job on that story and now it is recognized throughout the region.”

“The story received more than fifty five thousand votes. Is that something that you expected compared to the Bahamas and other countries which were voting from the onset?
“It took work. You know tireless nights, getting people and friends not only in Belize but the region and elsewhere to go on the page and vote. I am telling it was nonstop but I think it paid off at the end. All worth it at the end. We can defiantly show that we have an award under our belt.”
The “People’s Choice” trophy will be presented during the Annual General Assembly of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union in Kingston, Jamaica.
