Belize Faces International Pressure to take Dispute to the I.C.J.
One of the questions that has been continuously raised is whether the country is being pressured into taking the territorial claim to the I.C.J. As a member of the Group of Friends of Belize, the UK rep was asked about this.
Peter Hughes, British High Commissioner
“There is certainly from elements of the international community, from the U.K. yes. From the Friends of Belize, yes there is, because we think that the economy of this country is being held back because of this dispute. Because you have instability, there is always going to be a reluctance or reticence on the part of investors to come here when there is a claim of this nature. So yes, there is some pressure from us.”
