Bzean nurses celebrate their week w/service day
This week, nurses all over the country are participating in several activities organised as part of Nurses Week. Under the theme, “Nurses, Always There for You: Caring for Families,” the medical practitioners held a community service day where anyone could test their blood sugar, pressure, and eyesight. President of the Nurses Association of Belize, Jennifer Bowman, says today’s event was a way of giving back to the community they serve.

“It is mostly health promotion. It’s just a part of giving back to the community, community service. This is a part of a health promotion, you start with finding out, maybe what persons don’t know. A person might just come to our booth and we might check their blood sugar and find out that they have an elevated blood sugar, or check the blood pressure and find that the person has an elevated blood pressure and the person did not know. And not necessarily that the person might have to be on medication, but we could start with the person’s lifestyle, talk about their nutrition, exercise and things like that. We don’t necessarily have to go straight to medication or pharmaceutical methods of therapy.
Other activities for nurses week continue in all the districts, but the Belize City crew informs us they’ll be showing us up at their own karaoke contest on Wednesday night at the YWCA
