Bro. David recounts musical journey
Brother David and his Tribal Vibes have over the years been travelling on a long musical journey, one which stretches from brukdown to punta rock. A chronicle of that trip is embodied in the new CD, which is already in music stores all over the country. It’s titled “Belizean Products”. Kungo music founder David Obi told News 5 his new twelve-cut compact disc can be viewed as a cultural revival.

“Most naturally, we emphasise the kungo music because that dah fi we music. But we also did brukdown music because that dah part ah we Creole culture and we have to continue to ker that on fi Mr. Peters and fi the people. We also, because we have the convenience of the studio now, we did some punta rock, which is the Garifuna music, but Belizean music, so we did a lot of that too. I also put on a music that I learn the two months when I gone on tour in Costa Rica; the Central American Latin sound, so I put some ah that on too. And very naturally, we did reggae. We did one by Bob Marley, “Who the Cap Fits”.”
“Brukdown dah mi one a we original traditional music for the Creole people. Mr. Peters explained to me that dah one a di music weh we develop back ah di mahogany camps. And his father used to play the guitar and the accordion and dah deh he learn. Also, we have another music in Gales Point Manatee, the sambai, weh a lot ah Creole people no get fi see non at all, which is a total inspiring music because it bring out the afro-ness inna we.”
Meanwhile, the House of Culture opens a week-long pictorial exhibition on Monday which takes a look at the life of Brother David and the road he travelled on the way to becoming a recognised Belizean talent.
