P.U.P. Says B.E.L.’s Proposed Hike is Shameful Act of Duplicity by G.O.B.

The People’s United Party calls the hike a shameful act of duplicity on the part of both the Government of Belize and the state-owned B.E.L.  A release states that just months ago, B.E.L. requested an increase of seven point one percent in the cost per kilowatt hour, and the P.U.C. approved six point twenty-four percent for two years. Now, B.E.L. is requesting another increase. The P.U.P. states that Belizeans have been forced to pay more in electricity bills in the past year, not only because of the jump in the cost per kilowatt hour, but because in 2018, G.O.B. lowered the tax-threshold on electricity bills. According to the P.U.P. “to subject Belizeans to yet another increase in the cost of electricity would be unfair and can only be considered as undue hardship when the cost of living is already too high.” It was not lost on the P.U.P. that soon after GOB announced a twenty-five thousand dollar Christmas cheer to ministers, it is slapping all Belizeans with an electricity increase.
