Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Guilty

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman

The world’s most infamous and feared drug cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was found guilty on Tuesday by a U.S. Judge. The sixty-one-year-old international drug lord was convicted on all ten counts brought against him by U.S. prosecutors and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The eleven-week trial, with testimony from more than fifty witnesses, offered an unprecedented look at the inner workings of the Sinaloa Cartel. The U.S. government said Guzman trafficked tons of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and methamphetamine into the United States over more than two decades, consolidating his power in Mexico through murders and wars with rival cartels. During the trial, Vicente Zambada, son of one of the drug lords testified that the Sinaloa Cartel had infiltrated Belize and established links in the country as part of El Chapo’s international network of drug operations. Belize was mentioned again when a U.S. federal agent read text messages between El Chapo and his wife. El Chapo told his wife that he wants to buy between six hundred and thirty to seven hundred tons of cocaine in Belize.
