Xtra House shut down for health violations
The sign may read, “Closed for Renovations”, but the management and staff at Xtra House are rearranging more than just the furniture. The store’s owner, Rajesh Chawla, was ordered to close down the establishment until he complies with certain health requirements. The decision was made by the Belize Trade Licensing Board in consultation with the Public Health Bureau following Tuesday’s raid at the supermarket by health inspectors. On that day, officials found out of date food items, damaged and dented tins, spoiled merchandise and evidence of massive infestation of rodents. Valerie Jenkins, The regional health manager in the Ministry of Health, says before the store is allowed to reopen, Chawla will have to ensure that the vermin have been eradicated, the building’s interior is sanitised, the employees obtain food handlers certificates and that the store’s garbage is properly disposed of.
