Guatemalan President Celebrates Belize’s Referendum Decision
This afternoon, the Guatemalan Government issued a recorded statement by President Jimmy Morales alongside his Foreign Minister Sandra Jovel. Morales celebrated Belize’s decision to take the territorial dispute to the International Court of Justice and expressed hope that the issue be resolved soon. Here is an excerpt from the two and a half minute statement.
Jimmy Morales, President of Guatemala [Translated]
“People of Guatemala and People of Belize, today we are reaffirming before the world that dialogue and citizen participation strengthen our democracies. Today I celebrate, in a special way, the will of our Belizean brothers in the recent referendum which had positive results to continue promoting a peaceful solution. The dialogue between Guatemala and Belize had never been better than now. In the days ahead I will send a proposal to the prime minister of Belize, Dean Barrow, so that our Foreign Ministries jointly notify the International Court of Justice of the official results of our referendums.”
