Let’s Start the Conversation about Mental Health

Employees generally spend long hours at work, which means that the work environment should be healthy and stress free to their state of mind. According to studies, one in every five employees experiences mental health issues.  Today, one organization came forward to do something positive toward this critical issue. In an effort to start the conversation, the Belize Brain Society is hosting a series of sessions where employees of all levels and from several different groups and organizations, meet to discuss mental health. The aim according to founder, Kaylia Nunez is to help employees become mentally well.

“We all know that the greatest resource is human resource and if we do not help and guide them along the way then our place of business will not sustain. So hence the reason for the workshops.”

Nunez highlighted the importance of mental health in the work place. She says that the mental well being of employees is extremely important not only to their contribution but to their development as a person.

“If persons are mentally well, they simply won’t feel belonged. They simply won’t feel accepted. They simply won’t feel that is a profession for them. They know that mental wellness is a plus. Simple things that let people feel appreciated on the job.”

According to statistics, one in five persons is affected by mental illness. This comes in different forms such as acute and chronic stress. However, anything that puts high demand on an employee can be stressful. Nunez says that the human brain is the most powerful tool, which gets neglected the most until it gets sick.

“Sometimes you are extremely burnt out and you go back to work the next day. And then bam that might be the same day when something happens. So this is what the workshop is all about; for you to take care of you on the job. You, first, second and last.”
