Belize’s CARICOM Youth Ambassador Returns from Regional Youth Parliament Debate

CARICOM Youth Ambassador Kris Miller participated in the fifteenth regional youth parliament debate in Port of Spain, Trinidad last week. Miller and other youth ambassadors from across the region debated on the issue of strengthening borders to militate against crime while maintain humanitarian efforts. The topic, Miller says, is relevant to countries like Belize and Trinidad that are dealing with migration issues. During that debate, the youth parliamentarians advocated for the Caribbean to share the burden of host countries like Trinidad and Tobago with the Venezuelan migrant crisis. Today Miller spoke with News Five to share his experience.

“One of the main things that was brought out several times is getting the Caribbean to come together and handling this refugee situation as one Caribbean instead of one country alone. What we tried to share is if all Caribbean countries come together we will be stronger to handle this instead of one small country or one small island handling the situation by themselves. Unlike most countries, Belize doesn’t have a national youth parliament. All the rest of the countries that is something that they do annually. So, for me here in Belize is just trying to kick start the youth parliament here in Belize to get the young people into parliamentary actions and rules and regulations. It was a good insight for me as a Belizean since we don’t have it here so that we can start it here and that we planning to start.”

The debate was part of the week-long forty-fourth Annual Conference of the Caribbean, Americas and the Atlantic Region of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
