Health inspectors hit Albert Street

In Belize the term “nine days wonder” has come to signify an effort that starts off with much fanfare but soon fades off into the oblivion of official inaction. Some recent examples are the crackdown on illegal bicycle riders and the enforcement of speed limits with the new radar gun. But one ongoing campaign that has apparently endured is that of our public health inspectors. After busting some discount groceries last week, the officers today showed up at the big name stores Albert Street. News 5’s Jose Sanchez caught up with senior inspector Gerald Williams who assures us that as far as he’s concerned nobody is above the law.
Gerald Williams, Senior Health Inspector, M.O.H.
“We are continuing our routine inspection. We started last week and we will continue this week and next week we’ll also continue our exercise.”
Jose Sanchez
“A lot of people were saying you were afraid to touch the bigger stores, like Brodies and Ro-mac’s and I see it’s not the same here.”
Gerald Williams
“Well we would like to clear up that feeling that the public has. We are not here to attack anyone. We are not here upon complaints received, nor because of any special investigation, we are here carrying out our routine inspections.”
Jose Sanchez
“What did you gather today?”
Gerald Williams
“Well we found quite a number of expired foodstuff from off the shelves as you can see inside the pick up truck right now.”
Jose Sanchez
“And these stuff are from?”
Gerald Williams
“Both Ro-mac’s and Brodies.”
Jose Sanchez
“Were there any major infractions from these companies or just small stuff?”
Gerald Williams
“These are minor to what we removed last week.”
Besides retailers, the inspectors will also be visiting the warehouses of wholesale importers of food items.
