Classes Remains Closed for Students of La Inmaculada RC School
The Ministry of Education continues to monitor the situation as it pertains to La Inmaculada R.C. School. The school is located a few hundred feet away from the New River in Orange Walk Town and due to the stench of the water; its classes were suspended today and Friday. Students and teachers began reporting feeling ill, three days into their new school year. The Ministry of Health and the Department of the Environment became involved and the recommendation was to suspend classes. If the situation improves, children will return to class by Monday but in the event that does not happen, the Ministry of Education and the Catholic Management will relocate the students to ensure classes resume on Monday. We understand that as of today, the Department of the Environment is conducting a water treatment in the river near the school in the hope of improving the conditions there.
