International Trade Consultant on limitations

Errol Humphrey

International Trade Consultant Errol Humphrey has been advising the CARIFORUM Directorate and its member states on the monitoring of the Economic Partnership Agreement, known as the EPA. Humphrey says that there are a number of aspects to international trading and there are limited resources in smaller countries to deal with it.  The monitoring mechanism is needed so that the countries who have signed on to the agreement can fully benefit.

“The region is progressing gradually from the largest, Dominican Republic to the small, Montserrat. So I think where we are is that clearly some countries need more support than others and we understand that because in the region we know that there are lesser and more developed countries and therefore, we understand that some countries need more support than others. This programme is part of that kind of support. It is funded by the German Development Agency and it is administered through the CARIFORUM Directorate. So I am merely the tool helping them to deliver it.”

Represented at today’s workshop were stakeholders from trade-related ministries including the Customs Department, the Statistical Institute of Belize, Central Bank and the National Institute of Culture and History.
