University Groups, Church Missions Cancel Travel to Belize
From the hotels to the tour guides, all sectors in tourism are feeling the impact of the COVID-19. The Executive Director of the Belize Tourism Industry Association says that its members have also been experiencing cancellations, primarily as it relates to university or student groups and religious missions, who have been advised not to travel out of their respective country.
John Burgos, Executive Director, B.T.I.A.
“The main concern for the stakeholders, specifically the hotels, resorts, tour operators, tour guides—you know it trickles down to everyone down the value chain is the economic impact. They recognize the importance of protecting their health and well-being, but you cannot disregard the level of uncertainty which will lead to mass reduction of tourism. The cancelations are for March, April and I think some of them are leading even into may cause there is the uncertainty factor. They don’t know what’s going on, there no vaccine at this time so that’s where we are in terms of the immediate impact.”
