National Hand Washing Day; Clean Hands Save Lives

National Hand Washing Day was celebrated today; to mark the occasion hand washing stations were set up across the country where residents were exposed to proper techniques to keep your hands free of germs and bacteria and even viruses.  In Belize City, three schools were visited by the Ministry of Education where the children practiced how to keep their hands clean; they were also provided with Clorox wipes to sanitize their desks. Standard Six Teacher Danika Humes says that clean hands save lives.

“We set up stations around the school where we have the students go and they practice the proper hand washing techniques, cause you know many of us wash our hands but we are not doing the proper thing. So I did a workshop with Misses Cod in the summer at NaRCIE and we were taught the proper way how to wash our hands all the way up to the elbow. The way how we dispose of the papers and the way how we use the liquid. Even using the hand sanitizers cause many people don’t know that when we are using the hand sanitizers. We just rub and then that’s it. But we should rub until we feel some seeds; then we are guaranteed that the germs are left from the hand. But we just rub and go along our merry way. The hand washing technique; it is the same thing. Many times we don’t think about washing the nails, washing inside the palm of the hand, washing behind the hand because germs is all over. But you need to practice it and when you do it, after washing from your elbows right down, yow ah feel fresh. So these are the things that we are teaching the students and how to use the Clorox wipes properly especially in this time with this coronavirus. Many of them don’t even know what are some of these things that we use in order for them to keep clean. So we have to be modelling and teaching them in classrooms and telling them what they should do at home. So when we had them using the Clorox wipes to wipe down the desk, they realized how dirty their desks are. So it made a great impact on them and I hope that after today and throughout the whole session with the coronavirus pandemic that they would continue to keep themselves clean. And remember that clean hand saves lives.”
