La Isla Bonita Turns into Ghost Town Due to COVID-19

Daniel Guerrero

As we told you, residents of San Pedro Town tonight remain on lockdown. When we checked in today, the streets remain without traffic and Belize’s top tourist destination has become a ghost town. Due to the state of emergency businesses have closed down and social distancing is very much encouraged. Grocery stores are allowed to open for certain hours but some residents say that they have been having trouble buying their groceries. San Pedro Mayor Daniel Guerrero addressed the concerns this morning on Reef TV.

Caller

“My name is Admad Admud calling from local store. We opened this morning and the police and GSU closed us down. We don’t know what is the problem or if we can open or not.”

Daniel Guerrero, Mayor of San Pedro

“Groceries can open until ten, but you need to practice the social distancing and you need to have hand sanitizer, Lysol or soap and water for the clients in and outside the store.”

Caller

“We have all of this. I don’t allow people to go inside, only three, three, three.”

Daniel Guerrero

“You can go ahead and open I will just call Mister Noble and see that he checks your area because we are making sure that the police checks that very store is practicing the social distancing and having soap and water and hand sanitizers.  Right now like we mentioned we are working based on advice from the Ministry of Health. The release is until further notice. So as soon as we get a new briefing or a new advice from the ministry we will be putting out a new release.   We have the restaurants and deli that have been questioning but again that has to go with the recommendation from the health department. We don’t want to do it by ourselves until we get advice from them. If it does open it will be strictly delivery. You won’t be able to go and sit at a restaurant. It has to be that you call in and they will deliver or something like that.”
