One Thousand Live Chickens for Cayo Residents

Earl Trapp

Additional measures taken by government to lockdown Cayo District for fourteen days have further restricted the movement of residents in the twin towns of Santa Elena and San Ignacio.  Delivery, takeout and drive-thru services have been suspended for the next two weeks and everyone, with the exception of essential workers, is being asked to remain indoors.  The Mennonite and Chinese communities, however, have joined forces with the San Ignacio Town Council and today they set out to deliver over one thousand live chickens, as well as six hundred bags of groceries across both municipalities.  Mayor Earl Trapp explains how the partnerships and donations came about.

Earl Trapp, Mayor, San Ignacio/Santa Elena

“As leaders, the least we can do is bring different social partners together and see how we can better or in one way or the other assist the community.  So what the council has been doing over the past two, three weeks [is that] we have been working along with the different businesses, companies, friends seeking food items to assist the people as we go through this time of crisis.  I am very much happy to say that today through the contacts with Mr. Klaus Reimer, he works with, I think, the Spanish Lookout Association and they donated a thousand live hens and the hens, we distributed that this morning and we were trying to do at least two per household.  In some instances we gave three or four and I think that with the thousand hens we reached out to at least four hundred and fifty different households.  And then, again, Mr. Klaus Reimer brought a thousand or an additional [one] hundred cleaned chicken, dressed chicken and that again was just taken out and the guys are out distributing.  With that, the Chinese Association along with some of our employees and town council councilors, they are out in the field right now distributing bags of groceries.”
