35 Days Since Belize Has Recorded Positive Case of COVID-19
It’s day thirty-five since Belize has recorded a positive case of COVID-19, but the Ministry of Health remains on alert as border communities in neighbouring Central American countries continue spiking. Up north in Mexico, there are forty-nine thousand two hundred and nineteen confirmed cases, with five thousand one hundred and seventy-seven deaths. Meanwhile in Guatemala, there are one thousand nine hundred and twelve cases and thirty-five deaths recorded. As you know, in Belize, there were eighteen cases and two deaths. There are still some persons under investigation, which the Director of Health Services says are being monitored. Today, we spoke with Doctor Marvin Manzanero via phone and he says that they are being vigilant and continuing with random testing.

“We are now at day thirty-five without any case after we last documented our last three cases. We have nonetheless continued to do random testing. We did test sampling last week Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, but we are particularly concerned with the growing numbers in neighbouring Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras. As is, the entire Meso American region continues to report escalating number of cases and death. The only two countries that seem to not be having escalating numbers are Costa Rica and Nicaragua. So we are particularly vigilant for those numbers in our neighbouring countries.”

“Well, we are labelling under the persons under investigation anybody that we are taking out of the random sampling and also people that are being caught illegally crossing the border, who may be swabbed as random as well. So those are the people under investigation. And of course, anybody who shows up with any influenza like illness is being treated as a potential suspect as well.”
