Chetumal Businesses Close at 5 p.m. to Stop the Spread of COVID-19!
Chetumal is locking up shop at five every evening and this is what it looks like at this time. This latest measure was taken by our neighbours in the north. Mexican media reports that Othon P. Blanco’s mayor has called on businesses in Chetumal to close at five to slow down the spread of COVID-19, as a measure to prevent a collapse of the healthcare system. The move came into effect on Wednesday. In an announcement issued to businesses in the municipality of Othon P. Blanco, the mayor explained that the COVID-19 cases were on the rise and that it will increase the demand for hospital care and they won’t have capacity to accommodate all the sick. Contracorriente, an online site, quotes the mayor saying, “If this number continues to increase, it will cause serious problems for the health sector and it will get out of control and it will not be possible to attend to so many people infected in our hospitals in our city.” The communiqué pointed out that five days ago, on May twenty-third, there sixty positive cases and in the next three days after that, sixty-seven, seventy-one and eighty cases COVID-19 cases were confirmed.
