This is Harmony Young. She is sixteen years old, but unlike other teenage girls, Harmony is suffering from a life threatening condition. She has lost vision in her right eye. She sees blurry figures with her left eye. On March sixth, Harmony was diagnosed with a malignant tumor that sits on the frontal portion of the brain.
Sharmaine Augustus, Aunt of Harmony Young
“From that time we have been trying to see how much we can get assistance but with the COVID-19 situation it has cause some delay because we were going through the World Pediatric Project. So that went on pause. So since March sixth she has been deteriorating very fast.”
Harmony had to be hospitalized earlier this week after her situation got worse. She shivers a lot and experiences loss of appetite.
“The whole time, it is not as though we were not doing anything. We are banking on the assistance from World Pediatric to come our way and hope that she would have enough strength to go through it but right now that doesn’t seem to be the case. When I brought her to me she wasn’t eat and she is known to be a really big eater. So she wasn’t consuming anything. Because she is in my care I said let me take her to the hospital just to have them check her out and give me some advice as to what I can do with her.”
Harmony’s aunt, Sharmaine Augustus was told that Harmony needs urgent medical attention. The preference is to take Harmony to Guatemala where a doctor there has agreed to do the surgery. The cost, however, is a staggering twenty five thousand U.S. dollars. The family needs to leave the country as soon as the money is raise. Assisting the family is the Belize Brain Society.
Kaylia Nunez, Ambassador for Belize Brain Society
“She needs the surgery immediately and it is not if, but or maybe she needs the surgery immediately. But as you do know for many persons and for many reasons finance plays a major role at this point. So that is the reason we are here. Also, in the organization we always ask that persons assist how they can because every little counts at this point. At this junction where we are at the assistance is greatly needed.”
