Minor remanded and his mother lucks out of arrest

A mother almost joined her son at the Hattieville facilities as a prison inmate for using indecent words to a police constable. The woman, thirty-four year old Lavern Longsworth, appeared before Magistrate Albert Hoare on Tuesday. She was fined a hundred dollars and given until April thirtieth to pay but court records showed that she had an outstanding fine of over four hundred dollars and luckily for her, some good Samaritans came to the rescue, paid the fine and spared her from the prison experience. The incident happened when Constable Janille Scott captured her sixteen year old son after he escaped from the Belize Family Court where he was to be arraigned for a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm. Scott reported that the minor pushed him down the steps of the Court on Bishop Street and escaped. Scott and a B.D.F. soldier chased down the youth and caught him in front of Bowen and Bowen on King Street. The minor was subsequently charged with Aggravated Assault and remanded to the Hattieville Prison until May fourth. Twenty year old Shawn Garbutt reported to police that while he was on Lancaster Street on March twenty-third, three youths approached him and pulled out a nine millimeter pistol, pointed it at him and rode away on a bicycle. The youth will additionally be charged with Escape and another count of Aggravated Assault when he returns to the Belize Family Court on Friday April third.
