COVID-19 Cases Increase in Quintana Roo

Marvin Manzanero

The Director of Health Services also gave an update on the increase in cases in Mexico, particularly Quintana Roo. Here’s what he had to say:

Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services

“I think they changed color through the weekend, only behind Cancun area. That is something we have to look at closely and this is something that I think also underscores, and we are trying to get the Belizeans who are in Chetumal to be moved as quickly as we can back into Belize, following the due protocols. Mexico, as you know, opened most of what they had shutdown last week Monday, June first and the report as of Sunday is that the entire country was in a red zone because of the escalating numbers just about everywhere. Some state hospitals referring that they have been now overwhelmed with the amount of cases that they have and those numbers, in the new projections for Mexico, continue to increase and it doesn’t seem like Mexico will peak now and they have moved that date to the first week of July with a tapering off of their curve as late as October. So, that is something that we need to look at closely.”

A pair of Honduran nationals, who were detained for illegal fishing in the Gladden Spit on Sunday morning, is under quarantine. During the webcast, Director of Health Services, Doctor Marvin Manzanero shared that the men are at the Russell Chiste Garcia Auditorium in Dangriga.  The men are to be tested and will remain in quarantine and re-tested before they are taken out of quarantine and handed over to the relevant authorities for the illegal fishing activities. Oscar Dariel Cruz and Erlin Nephtali Aleman were caught onboard a fiberglass vessel, Calale, with a considerable amount of fish and fishing gear. They were discovered by a joint patrol consisting of members of the Belize Coast Guard and rangers from the Southern Environmental Association.
