6-Year-Old Boy is the First Child Hospitalized with COVID-19 at K.H.M.H.
A six-year-old boy tested positive for COVID-19 and now he is hospitalized at the K.H.M.H. He is the first pediatric case in the hospital as of Wednesday evening. When he appeared on Ask the Experts today, DHS Marvin Manzanero also shared that the little boy is a referral from the Northern Regional Hospital and that he has a pre-existing kidney condition. His medical exams also show that he has pneumonia. Today, Manzanero provided details on the first child hospitalized as a result of the virus, as well as an update on the other active hospitalizations to date:
Dr. Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services
“In terms of where we are with hospitalizations, primarily for Karl Huesner, it is important that we flag this because we now have the first pediatric case hospitalized now at Karl Huesner’s COVID-19 unit – that’s a six-year-old male referred from the northern regional hospital who has a specific kidney situation and his x-ray is documenting that he has pneumonia which is an infection of the lower lung portion. He has been hospitalized as of yesterday’s evening. He is currently stable, not requiring supplementary oxygen but he is the first pediatric case hospitalized at the K.H.M.H.’s COVID-19 unit. Aside from him, there are six other patients hospitalized at K.H.M.H.’s COVID-19 unit; one of those is ventilated; two patients are on a high flow of oxygen; the other persons are on supplementary oxygen which means we are scaling them down in an attempt to wean them off the oxygen and see if they are able to tolerate it and see if they can go home after that. Karl Heusner and Northern Regional are the ones we would routinely follow because they are the entities that are having the vast amount of cases as you would know. At the Northern Regional Hospital, up to today, they have only one admission and the patient that was transported earlier to Karl Heusner, as well. One person self discharged which means they decided to go home against medical advice and one person that was discharged from the hospital home.”
