Teachers take CPR training

The Belize Red Cross regularly offers First Aid training and on Monday a workshop got underway for teachers of Anglican schools. The teachers who came from all over the country, have been learning how to administer CPR, rescue breathing, treat someone who has been poisoned, suffers from seizures or broken a bone. Adela Parra, a first aid instructor says because the participants deal with children on a daily basis, they need to know what to do when a student is injured.

“The whole idea to hold a training like this is to prepare the teachers that if anything should happen at schools, they can render assistance immediately rather than panicking and you know they don’t know what to do. So at this point I think when they leave today they will have an idea what to do.”

“When a person is on fire, many people intend to take buckets of water and go or people take a blanket and they run to the casualty. Clearly this is not right because before this blanket arrives, oxygen is going and it is going to blaze more so it is important that if you have to smother, go from underneath and then you roll, quickly you smother the fire immediately.”

“This morning we have covered so far fractures and burns then we will move on to what we call seizures and epilepsy that they will be able to deal with it in school. It is something very common that they encounter in school.”
