COVID Cases Increasing in Belize and Cayo Districts

The court’s virtual opening is a testament to the changing work environments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since December twentieth, the country has been under stricter movement regulations to reduce the virus’ spread.  But is it working? Over the extended weekend up to today, the Ministry of Health and Wellness recorded one hundred and thirty-six new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to confirmed cases to eleven thousand five hundred and ninety-two.  The positivity rate is at twenty point one percent, with ninety-nine cases under investigation.  Today, Minister Michel Chebat expressed concerns over the number of cases recorded in the Belize and Cayo districts.

“Unfortunately, we are still seeing increasing numbers. We still are seeing hotspots. The Cayo District is a hotspot right now. Belize District is also a hotspot. But in the area where we have contained the movements of people we’ve seen a gradual reduction in the numbers. We are cautiously optimistic. We think that the regulations we’ve put in place is bearing fruit and so we continue to look at the numbers across the spectrum to see how best to move forward.”
