Belize Braces for 3rd Wave of COVID-19

Michel Chebat

Ministry officials are still unsure whether the new UK or South African strains of the novel coronavirus are in Belize.  The UK variant has been detected in neighbouring Mexico.  As we reported on Friday, samples have been sent to Baylor College of Medicine and CARPHA to test if any of the new variants are in Belize.  Health and Wellness Minister Michel Chebat says that the ministry is concerned, especially about the possibility of a third wave.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Health & Wellness

“That strain is of concern to us and we are looking at it very closely because we are concerned about a third wave in Belize. We had the Henry Reiv Brigade leave after being here almost twelve months; they were supposed to be here for only six. They have left. Some of the doctors from the regular brigade also left and we had a contingent come in Saturday evening. I believe it is about twenty-eight medical officers to replace some of those who left.”
