Doctor retired after infant deaths
Sources at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital have indicated that Dr. Lavel Reyes has been given an early retirement by the Ministry of the Public Service. This follows an investigation into the deaths of two infants at the hospital. As News Five first reported, Lavern Meighan and Tracy Bainton, both classified as high risk cases by the private doctors went into delivery at the KHMH within hours of each other in early August. The women claimed that despite their pleas for caesarian sections from early on, these were not performed until it was too late to save the babies. The hospital determined that Dr. Reyes was in charge of both cases and the KHMH interim board recommended that she be suspended for the duration of the investigation. They later turned over their findings and recommendation for further action to the Public Service Commission. Dr. Reyes was on suspension with full pay for almost seven months until the final decision was made. News Five was unable to obtain comment from the commission or from the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Henry Anderson who was in meetings all day.
