Ticketing System for Violators Now in Full Effect

Kareem Musa

At the last sitting of the House of Representatives, legislation was amended to allow for the ticketing of violations under the Public Health Safety Act. Essentially, the five thousand dollars charge that was imposed on violators has now been reduced to five-hundred-dollar tickets for the improper wearing of face masks, breach of social distancing rules and other violations of quarantine regulations such as engaging in contact sports.  The system is similar to that of a traffic ticket where you will have fifteen days to make a payment or will be summoned before a court. Here’s Minister Musa with more:

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs

“Under the previous quarantine regulations, members of the public were subjected to being detained if they were not wearing their masks or if they were breaching other parts of the regulation, they were taken to the police station, they were processed and told to return to the court the following day and that resulted in an overcrowding not just of the police station but also of the court house and so we saw where that in itself could be a potential superspreader and hence the reason we decided to move in the direction of the issuing of tickets for offenses.”
