Allocation Letter is Here; Belize to get 100,800 in First Shipment

There is good news for Belize because today, the allocation letter from COVAX facility letter for the first shipment of vaccines for the country.  It has been confirmed that sometime in late March, or early April, Belize will receive one hundred thousand eight hundred doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and that’s very likely the Astra Zeneca one.  That translates to fifty thousand four hundred persons getting vaccinated for COVID-19 because it is two doses per person. That is nowhere near achieving herd immunity, which is seventy percent of the population, which amounts to approximately two hundred and eighty thousand people. Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat gave an update.

“I am pleased to say that early this morning, Belize did receive its allocation letter and that helps us to get one step closer to the reception of the vaccines. And so I think we are now seeing the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel as we speak. We now have some clearer indications as to the amount that we are going to be getting and I can tell you we are going to be getting one hundred thousand eight hundred vaccines through the COVAX facility and this is going to be the first shipment that we are going to be receiving. We are going to be receiving a subsequent shipment either in the third or fourth quarter of this year. We are not limited to just the COVAX facility; we have been knocking on every single possible door that we can to either ask for or to purchase vaccines and that is an ongoing process and we are sure that our efforts will be bearing fruit quite shortly.”
