The story of what happened to the Belize Jaguars when the landed in Port-au-Prince on Monday has gotten considerable international sports coverage. CBS Sports to TMZ, Al Jazeera and even the Times of India have circulated the news about the team’s bus being pulled over by armed gunmen as they left the airport and the negotiations for their release with Haitian police. The men were identified as members of the Fantom 509 gang by Onz Cherry on Twitter. CBS news reported that members of the Haitian Football Federation visited the Belize delegation on Monday evening to express their solidarity and offer their support. The qualifier is part of the first round of CONCACAF games for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Belize has never qualified for the World Cup finals, while Haiti qualified only once, in 1974.
