Belizean Child Among Unaccompanied Migrants Reaching U.S. Border

Last week more than eleven thousand unaccompanied children from Central America were taken into custody by U.S. authorities as they arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border, the highest number since 2019. Most of them are teenagers, but hundreds are under twelve years old.  Today, Breitbart News posted a bilingual interview with several of these young people making the trek.  Among them is a child who says she is from Belize and that she is hoping to reach her father in the U.S. Her mother remains in Belize.

Reports are the Belizean child may be standard four student from a Belize City primary school. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services refugee office, since October two-thirds of unaccompanied children caught at the border have been from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Mexican children make up most of the remainder.  Even though several of the children in the Brietbart interview say they have family in the U.S., they could be looking at long waits in the crowded order facilities set up for these unaccompanied minors. They may be there weeks, even months and there is no guarantee they will be allowed to remain in the United States after that. President Biden has asked people in the region not to send their children alone. Vice President Kamala Harris says she will be looking for a diplomatic solution to the problem.
