G.O.B. Speaks on Israel Palestine Violence
Recent attacks by Israeli officials against Palestinians has prompted to Government of Belize to issue a release condemning the acts of violence. On Friday of last week Israeli officials used stun grenades and smoke grenades against Palestinian protestors outside the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem. Israeli forces eventually made their way inside the Mosque. The recent attacks against Palestinians in the area are the latest in a decades old land dispute between the two groups. Israeli Jewish settlers have laid claim to Sheikh Jarrah a community that is reportedly home to hundreds of Palestinian families. Members of the community have engaged in violent protest with Israeli authorities over the recent dispute. Reports are that dozens of Palestinian citizens and Israeli officers have been killed in this latest clash. The Government of Belize, on Monday, issued a release placing on record its deep concern about the escalation of tensions over the last few days. The release says that Belize unequivocally condemns the violent confrontations and attacks against civilians at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. The release noted that any forcible eviction of Palestinians would be a flagrant violation of international and human rights law. Belize also called for Israel to respect the Palestinian people’s holy sites and fundamental human rights.
