Police Officer in OW with COVID-19; Department Offering Incentives to Officers
And police officers are clearly at risk. In fact, News Five learned today that an officer from the Orange Walk Police formation has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. The department is closely monitoring the situation, as several officers have since been sent home while they await the results of their PCR test. With eighty percent of police officers still not vaccinated, the Belize Police Department is looking for incentives. These include the chance to win a luxurious overnight stay for two at a resort in the Cayo District.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“I do agree with you that we need to have more of our enlisted officers do this. And we are doing so. IF you notice we have some persons from SPU. We have some from MIT. Mr. Serrano brought some from San Ignacio. There are some from Belmopan police station. They are here to be vaccinated as well. What I am doing as of today is that very police officer that gets vaccinated, there name will go in a thing for a raffle, and we are raffling a night for two at Ka’ana resort in Cayo District. The night for two will also include continental breakfast and the likes. So, it is done with a move to try and provide some incentives to officers who may want to be vaccinated. And I know that there are some people who are afraid of getting vaccinated. But I believe it is a good thing.”
