Belize to Receive Vaccines from U.S. Government

Keith Gilges

The U.S. has committed four billion dollar to the COVAX facility for the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to low-income countries. Additionally, two weeks ago President Biden and other leaders committed half a billion vaccines to be distributed. Belize is on that list. While Gilges could not tell us how much vaccines Belize will receive, when or how, those vaccines will be delivered, the U.S. is now in phase two of its vaccination plan. He assured us vaccine donations from the U.S. will make its way to Belize.

Keith Gilges, Chargé d’Affaires, U.S. Embassy of Belize

“Phase who then is to say, we have been ramping up production, we have sufficient numbers of vaccines in the US. Now, how we get them out to the rest of the world. And, the president committed a while back, four billion dollars, to the COVAX facility. On June tenth he and other leaders committed half a billion vaccines to be distributed. Now that sounds easy and we don’t just put them on planes and send them out. There has to be the logistical apparatus in place to make sure when the vaccines get to places that they can be used properly, used quickly, gotten into arms fast, figure out where those places are most needy. Belize is on that list. Belize is one of those countries that we will be providing vaccines either directly or through the COVAX facility. Again, this is part of our effort to engage multilaterally.”
