COVID in Midway: Chairman Says Protocols Were Being Followed

There are reports of a COVID-19 cluster and possible community spread in Midway Village in the Toledo District.  Information is that so far more than twenty positive cases were confirmed two days ago. Today, News Five’s Andrea Polanco spoke with Chairman Marco Ico via phone for an update.  He says a vaccination team detected symptoms in one resident who then he tested positive. Chairman Ico says it is not known where the man contracted the virus, but that contact tracing is underway in nearby villages.

On the Phone: Marco Ico, Chairman, Midway Village

“The COVID-19 situation out here is not showing much, like people or sick or are ill, it is not showing. They symptoms are not showing. They are getting positive results. About two days ago we got about twenty-four results positive. So, I am not sure if we got more after that. I believe we are trying to prevent as much so we don’t spread to the older people. We already swabbed the shops, the corn mills and other places.  Only couple families have and it is among the families.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, it is relatives? The people who have tested positive are all relatives to each other?”

On the Phone: Marco Ico

“Yes. Yes.”

Andrea Polanco

“Were they being safe or did they get a little relaxed?”

On the Phone: Marco Ico

“All of that was being enforced to do because as the community health worker, also and as chairman, I tell them the people to make sure they wear mask properly; wash hands; going to shop and to social distance when they meet people.”

Andrea Polanco

“And were they following your advice?”

On the Phone: Marco Ico

“People were following my advice because I saw it and I was working with the Alcalde to enforce this so that we don’t have a spread of COVID.   When we get this message a couple days ago that someone has symptoms was when the vaccination team came to Midway and when they find out, the nurses, they said that when they tested him he was positive and they didn’t give him the vaccine. They told him they would come back and swab all the families and they swabbed the family and the wife was positive but the children weren’t positive. So, I don’t see how this is going so much further and then they swabbed those who had worked with him during the week they had the virus and so that is the only person who had the virus but I don’t know where he caught it.”
