Happy Indigenous People’s Day
The Maya People of Southern Belize joined in celebrating today as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. This year’s theme is “Leaving No One Behind: Indigenous Peoples and the Call for a New Social Contract.” According to the United Nations, “a social contract is an unwritten agreement that societies make to cooperate for social and economic benefits.” The call to not leave anyone behind stems from the historic inequalities suffered by indigenous peoples across the world. This year’s theme emphasizes the inclusion of indigenous peoples in addressing some of the most pressing issues, including the climate crisis and the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s a presentation from the Maya Leader’s Alliance.
