ComPol Williams: “Rights and Freedoms Subjected to Limitations”
Commissioner of Police Chester Williams also spoke on the matter, adding that the constitution provides for certain limitations of those fundamental rights and freedoms. A public health crisis is reason enough for limiting those fundamental rights and freedom, as per the constitution, says ComPol Williams.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“You would know that in section three of the constitution which we refer to as the introduction to the Bill of Rights, it clearly stipulates that we do have certain fundamental rights and freedoms as guaranteed under the constitution. But in that same section, it also says that these rights are subjected to certain limitation, public health being one of those listed limitations. So, while we do, as citizens of this country certain fundamental rights and freedoms, those rights do have limitations. And, it cannot be that we must exercise our individual rights at ht expense of the greater good of the society or community. And, it cannot be that one individual right must trump the right of the humanity. I believe the constitution was set up in such a way; it protects the masses of the people. As I’ve said before, if these people believe the covid-19 regulation repugnance the provision of the constitutions, there is a legal recourse they can take to challenges the regulations in the Supreme Court.”
