Guatemalan President Addresses Territorial Dispute at 76th UNGA
The ongoing Seventy-sixth session of the United Nations General Assembly was opened on September fourteenth and is chaired by Abdulla Shahid, President of the General Assembly. Earlier today, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei addressed the gathering of heads of state in New York City. During his presentation, President Giammattei touched briefly on the resolution of the territorial dispute with Belize, acknowledging the World Court’s role in settling the longstanding issue between both neighboring countries.

“We reiterate that the International Court of Justice plays a vital role as the main judicial body of the United Nations and we reaffirm our commitment to resolve in a permanent and definitive manner before this court the territorial and maritime and island dispute with Belize, a country with whom we would like to have a privileged relationship in order to peacefully resolve common problems.”
