A Thoughtful Donation to K.H.M.H. Nursing Staff

Javier Ponce

We’ve been reporting on the physical and emotional toll that the COVID-19 pandemic has been having on frontline healthcare workers. Personnel from the COVID-19 units would go hours on end caring for patients – some to their last breath – and then have to do it all over again the next day. The mental health of these healthcare workers is often times taken for granted. But Courts Belize heard their cries and today handed over four recliners, a coffee maker and other supplies. News Five was there for the brief handing-over ceremony.

Javier Ponce, Managing Director, Unicomer

“As a socially responsible company we are very happy to be donating these recliners and all these things that we know will prove very useful for our K.H.M.H. staff. We know that they are under a lot of pressure, a lot of stress right now with everything that’s been going on with the COVID-19 situation here in Belize. We acknowledge that [and] we want to help them out.”

“This donation will definitely come as a great surprise and I am telling you that my staff will love it. We don’t get much time to get a break, but when we do get a break it will be in comfort. They will be able to take a power nap, relax their feet after standing for several hours. And anybody who knows nurses knows that coffee runs in their veins. So I am telling you they will be overjoyed and they will totally love it. It will definitely help them, they will feel encouraged. This really does make them feel that what they are doing, the hours that they are spending is being seen by the public and they are being appreciated for it.”

“Although I don’t work in the unit, this donation makes me feel good because a lot of the staff it takes a lot to get up and go every day knowing what you are going to face. So just knowing that there is someone out there that cares about you and is concerned about how you feel going through your day – that means a lot to me because when my staff is happy, I am happy.”
